Four years ago at about this moment, in the still-early days of his administration, Joe Biden was taking a fateful ego trip. 

The historian Jon Meecham, an occasional adviser and speechwriter to Biden, had organized a late-March gathering at the White House of other popular historians of a Democratic bent, including Doris Kerns Goodwin, Michael Beschloss, Michael Eric Dyson, Annette Gordon-Reed, and Walter Isaacson.
